Cosmonautics, which is presented in England for the very first time, is a true gem of contemporary Russian filmmaking. The film invites us to immerse ourselves into a thrilling roller-coaster of suspense, surprise and shock while juxtaposing the stiff, sterile atmosphere of the universe's professionalism, the institutionalised cosmos. Cold scientific facts and numbers collide with a man's ambition to redefine himself. At the same time the film's Beckettian style introduces a tragicomic view of the human nature and a sense of subtle black humour that makes it very different from any other film of its kind.
